Alright, well here is another weirdo food news story I came across. Apparently these weird food stories are quite the norm lately. And since it took place in my hometown, I guess I better talk about it!
Last Sunday, in Times Square, food-eating champion, Joey Chestnut (what an awesome food last name for someone who just eats and eats and eats) set a world record for eating 45 slices of pizza in 10 minutes!
He won the first Famous Famiglia World Pizza Eating Championship and is now known as a “Pizza Powerhouse”! I know Famous Famiglia only because one day, about 6 years ago, I discovered it on a starved rampage through Terminal 6 (Jetblue) at JFK airport. Pizza for breakfast had never been better!
They also have a few locations throughout the Big Apple, and all over the country in airports, universities, and other similar locations. For airport pizza, which is usually like mall pizza (ugh), it wasn’t half bad.
Anyway, let’s get back to Mr. Chestnut, shall we? He’s 24 years old and from San Jose, California — our other bee’s new neck of the woods. And he’s got some serious pizza-eating technique — fasting for a couple of days, then folding each slice to make them go down easier.
And this isn’t his only success — in 2007 he won Coney Island’s July Fourth Hot-Dog Eating Contest! (I can deal with one hot dog, but 59 in 10 minutes???)
Chestnut has made it his business to travel the U.S. and enter these eating contests. Is anyone else picturing the pie-eating contest scene in Stand By Me?
