The other day, when I read that story about the poacher with a bunch of lobsters down his pants, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the day I did the same thing…just kidding! But thinking of lobster adventures did remind me of a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine a couple Septembers ago.
We went on a cruise that took us through New England and Canada with my grandparents, Nana and Papa. It was a fun time, and one of the most enjoyable places that we visited was Bar Harbor.
Once we disembarked the ship we headed for the car rental facility so that we could spend some time at the top of Cadillac Mountain. It was gorgeous and we really built up an appetite. And rightly so – we were in Maine, so we just had to have some lobster. All of us were looking forward to lunch, except maybe my honey (he eats three things – cheeseburgers, potatoes, and ice cream).
We shared an excellent lunch – Nana, Papa, and I enjoying Maine Lobster, French fries, and cold beers (yes, even Nana had a beer!) while Jon had his burger. It was delicious. After lunch, we dropped Nana and Papa back at the ship and we had a few hours left to explore Bar Harbor.
We happened upon a quaint little ice cream shop called Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium. It’s been in its most recent incarnation for about twenty years and is completely charming. Ben & Bill’s, like many other businesses in Bar Harbor, had quite the lobster décor. In fact, there’s a very tall lobster eating a giant ice cream cone out front! We both love ice cream, so went inside. Inside we found, much to our delight, so much candy, ice cream, and other goodies that it was hard to choose. Then, low and behold, I saw the menu (and the bucket) of LOBSTER ICE CREAM!
I had to ask for a sample.
I was slightly nervous yet greatly exhilarated as the spoon neared my mouth. (Imagine: I am grinning, about to taste this wild flavor while my future husband is gagging and turning green next to me at the very prospect of having any type of lobster, let alone lobster ice cream!)
And wow…the buttery ice cream began to melt in my mouth only to reveal a very large chunk of frozen lobster! There really aren’t any words to describe it other than…ice cream…butter…lobster…cold.
It’s kind of like when you eat those popcorn flavored jelly beans…the flavor is amazing yet there is something not quite right with the texture. The sample spoonful was more than enough.
I got the Black Raspberry. My honey got the Mint Chocolate Chip.
They were delicious.
